In the event of a storm, take action to protect your property and business - cover windows with storm shutters, siding or plywood. Cover all computers, printers, files and other important documents with large garbage bags. Move all equipment and documents from the floor, place onto desks and on top of file cabinets.
Assemble a disaster supply kit with medication and first aid; a 3-5 day supply of non-perishable food and a non-electric can opener; at least 3 gallons of water per person; sleeping bags; a battery-powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries; hygiene items such as soap and toothpaste and special items for infants, elderly or disabled family members.
Review your insurance policy to ensure that it covers Hurricane, Windstorm and Flood. The amount of your coverage should be sufficient to fully replace your property in event of total loss. Pay particular attention to the terms and conditions of your policy. Be especially aware of all exclusions and deductibles applicable to your policy in relation to Hurricane, Windstorm and Flood.
In the event of a storm, take digital photos and an inventory of the contents of your home. This information can be vital if you have to file a claim. Gather passports and other forms of identification; copies of insurance policies, medical records, prescriptions, etc. Place in a waterproof container or large zip-lock bag. Make sure you take copies with you if you are forced to evacuate.
Move vehicles out of flood-prone areas and into garages if possible, or park vehicles away from trees and close to homes or buildings. All motor vehicle policies do not cover Hurricane damage so check your policy carefully to ensure that you have coverage. If you are unsure, contact your insurance company.
After the hurricane, if you suffer property loss contact your insurance company as soon as possible. Before doing repairs to your property, take photographs and make a list of the damages. Do not have permanent repairs made until your insurance company has inspected the property and you have reached an agreement on the amount of damage and the cost of repairs.
